“Jesse Case triples as musical director, composer and sound designer - and Depraved New World offers the most complex use to date at The Second City of music, sound and sampling. Case truly is a seventh cast member." - The Windy City Times

“Second City’s latest mainstage outing sees the storied institution in top form. With indispensable piano accompaniment and musical direction from Jesse Case, Depraved New World is especially rich sonically - this is one of the most musical mainstage productions in recent memory.... Depraved New World sounds fantastic." - Chicago Theater Beat

A 2014 JEFF AWARD NOMINEE FOR BEST REVUE

Unlike my soundtrack and production work, my sound design for Second City uses copyrighted samples - in this casethe newest, most modern-sounding music I could find (to match the tone of the show) and a bevy of uber-cheesy early sixties girl rock (to match the content). Modern music in early 2014 was almost entirely comprised of synth-for-synth imitations of early ‘80s production pioneers like Devo and Light Asylum, which inspired this analog-synth-heavy sound design.

This show had a particularly large, varied, quickly-moving running order (including nine original songs, not included here) and so there was more space for interstitial music than any other Second City show I’ve done - and much less time per track.

Conversely, I also composed a short solo violin piece to underscore a scene the show. “Argument in D Major” (Track 12) was performed by violinist John MacFarlane, who can also be heard on “Spider” and the “Silk Suites.”
